Description
1880-1900
As the Marine Corps adopted “Semper Fidelis” as its motto in 1883, Marines began refining their service-defining character with the publication of the first amphibious landing manual: “The Naval Brigade and Operations Ashore.” Marines would then soon find themselves heavily involved in the Spanish-American War, fighting ashore on Puerto Rico, Cuba, and in the Philippines. The turn of the century then saw Marines fighting against a Filipino insurrection.
