1980-2000
After the Vietnam War, the Marine Corps resumed its role as the nation’s expeditionary force-in-readiness. They Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, was bombed—resulting in the most casualties during a peacetime operation that the Marine Corps ever suffered. Marines would go on to play a key role in the invasion of Granada and later join the invasion of Panama. In the early 1990s, Marines helped to liberate Kuwait from Iraq and performed evacuation and humanitarian operations in Liberia and Somalia.
