2000-2025
Following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and at the Pentagon, Marines soon were sent to Afghanistan and were embroiled in conflict with radical Islamic terrorists—fighting in places such as Garmsir and Marjah. In 2003, the Marine Corps played a prominent role in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The next year, Marines fought a counter-insugency campaign which included the Battle of Fallujah and operations in Ramadi and Al-Qa’im. Marines were instrumental in the joint fight against the Islamic State. Most recently, they were among those who assisted in the evacuation of Kabul as the United States withdrew from Afghanistan.
