“On April Fool’s Day in 1783, thirty-three of the last Marines on duty were mustered out and paid off. Along with the sailors of the crew of the last surviving frigate of the Continental Navy, they were paid off at Petuxet, Rhode Island. The vessel was converted to a cargo ship, which went aground and was abandoned – leaving the new nation without a Navy or Marines from 1783 to 1794.
Prints of this painting were most popular gifts for retirements for a number of years. Close perusal will reveal character studies and also indicate many of these men’s intentions for their ultimate disposal of this final pay call.”
